However,
there are other types of rogue security software, which
make there way onto the users' computer as drive-by downloads,
which take advantage of weaknesses in the computer's own
security software, generally in web browsers or e-mail clients,
and can actually install themselves without any user interaction.
Once
installed, the victim may be encouraged to purchase additional
services and software through phony detection of malware
alerts, as well as, disabling parts of the infected pc system,
as to prevent the user from uninstalling the rogue software.
Another common tactic is for the rogue security software
to initially install real malware onto the computer and
then alert the user after detection.
By
utilizing scare or scareware tactics, the victim is presented
with legitimate looking security alerts, creating a sense
of urgency to quickly take action and remove the malicious
code and thereby restore the computer to optimum levels
of performance.
Discovery
of the first of this type of rogue security software was
detected in 2003 and although detection and user awareness
has improved, they continue to thrive even now late into
2009. As of 2007 a list of 349 different Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware
Products had been identified and documented. The most comprehensive
